How to Prepare Effectively for the Inspire Global Assessment (Formerly Known as NCAS)

If you’re an Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) pursuing registration in Canada, the Inspire Global Assessment (previously called NCAS) is a significant milestone in your journey.

This assessment evaluates your readiness to practice nursing in Canada by measuring your knowledge, skills, and competencies against Canadian standards.

While the process can feel overwhelming, proper preparation can boost your confidence and success.

Here are some beneficial tips and guidelines to help you prepare effectively.

1. Understand the Structure of the Inspire Global Assessment

The Inspire Global Assessment consists of two key components:

  • Competency-Based Assessment (CBA): A computerized exam that tests your theoretical knowledge and decision-making skills in various nursing scenarios.

  • Simulation Lab Assessment (SLA): A hands-on practical exam where you’ll demonstrate your clinical skills, critical thinking, and communication in realistic scenarios.

Knowing what to expect allows you to focus your study efforts on the specific skills and knowledge required.

2. Review the Competency Framework

The assessment is based on the entry-level competencies for Canadian nurses. Familiarize yourself with these competencies to understand what is expected. You can find this information on regulatory bodies’ websites or through preparation courses designed for IENs. Focus on the following areas:

  • Clinical decision-making and prioritization

  • Communication and collaboration

  • Safe and ethical nursing practice

  • Patient-centered care

3. Practice Case Scenarios

Case scenarios are a significant part of both the CBA and SLA. Practice analyzing and solving clinical situations, focusing on:

  • Identifying priority nursing problems

  • Making evidence-based decisions

  • Explaining your rationale for interventions

Pro Tip: Watch my YouTube video, where I go over a detailed nursing case scenario. In the video, I break down each step, provide answers, and explain the rationales to help you think critically and systematically. MedSurg Case Scenario Video: https://youtu.be/k9q69cPvl1w

4. Brush Up on Your Clinical Skills

The SLA component requires you to demonstrate hands-on nursing skills. Practice core skills such as:

  • Performing a head-to-toe assessment

  • Administering medications safely

  • Infection control measures

  • Communicating effectively with patients and healthcare teams

If you don’t have access to a nursing lab, use creative alternatives at home, such as practicing with a family member or using props to simulate clinical tools.

5. Strengthen Your Theoretical Knowledge

The CBA tests your understanding of:

  • Anatomy and physiology

  • Pharmacology

  • Pathophysiology

  • Nursing interventions and rationales

Use NCLEX preparation books, online resources, and practice exams to reinforce your theoretical knowledge. Focus on weak areas and review questions with detailed rationales.

6. Develop Test-Taking Strategies

Both components of the Inspire Global Assessment require effective time management and critical thinking. Here are some strategies:

  • For CBA: Read the questions carefully, eliminate wrong answers, and choose the best option based on patient safety and priority frameworks like ABC (Airway, Breathing, Circulation).

  • For SLA: Practice thinking out loud to articulate your reasoning and ensure your interventions align with Canadian nursing standards.

7. Manage Your Stress and Anxiety

Feeling nervous is natural, but excessive stress can hinder your performance. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques like:

  • Mindfulness meditation or yoga

  • Deep breathing exercises

  • Creating a realistic study schedule with breaks

Check out my free online meditation class for nurses, available on my YouTube channel, to help you manage anxiety and stay focused during your preparation.

8. Join a Support Network

Connect with other IENs who are also preparing for the Inspire Global Assessment. Sharing experiences and resources can be incredibly helpful. Look for:

  • Online forums or Facebook groups for IENs

  • Study partners or accountability groups

You can also join my Facebook page, where I share tips, resources, and motivation tailored for IENs.

9. Consider Enrolling in a Prep Course

If you need additional guidance, consider enrolling in a preparation course specifically designed for IENs. These courses often provide practice exams, simulation scenarios, and expert feedback to enhance your readiness.

10. Reflect and Prepare Holistically

Remember that the assessment doesn’t just test your knowledge but also your ability to think critically and communicate effectively. Reflect on your past experiences and how they align with Canadian nursing practices.
